James Bulley
James Bulley (b.1984) is an artist, musician, curator, and sound designer. His spatial practice is rooted in sound, operating across installation art, performance, immersive sound, moving image, and sculpture. His work promotes reciprocal relations with the more-than-human world, exploring place-making and hidden narrative to co-create works with both human and more-than-human actors.
His artworks and compositions include The Mother Goose Series, a series of five sound box constructions celebrating Maurice Ravel featuring the Royal Northern Sinfonia; Still the Hours with Claire Doherty; Maelstrom, Living Symphoniesand Variable 4 as Jones/Bulley; Dawns with non zero one and the National Trust; Daphne Oram’s Still Point with Shiva Feshareki and the London Contemporary Orchestra; and Tactus.
Bulley’s immersive art and sound design work includes collaborations with Marshmallow Laser Feast, Superflux, and others, spanning film-sound artworks, virtual reality, exhibition sound, public art, and theatre. His music and sound design for film includes Maria, A Thousand Fires, Ayouni, Island, and Ness.
Alongside his art practice, Bulley is an active researcher and lecturer. He completed a doctorate in Music at Goldsmiths, University of London in 2018 and has established archives including the Lily Greenham Archive, Hugh Davies Collection, and Longplayer Archive.
