Maria Loizidou
Maria Loizidou studied at the University of London, where she obtained a BSc and MSc in Chemical Engineering, as well as a PhD in the field of waste treatment. She is an Emerita Professor at the School of Chemical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and founded the Unit of Environmental Science & Technology, specialising in the management of solid and liquid waste and the recovery of materials within the framework of the circular economy.
She has successfully led more than 200 environmental research projects at NTUA as the scientific coordinator and has organised a large number of international scientific conferences. She established the Annual International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management, held in Greece, which is considered one of the leading scientific events worldwide in its field.
She has served as Dean of the School of Engineering at the Cyprus University of Technology, as well as a member of its Governing Committee from the university’s establishment until it became autonomous (2003–2012). She was also Chair of the Department of Environmental Science, which she developed from the ground up.
She has received awards from various international organisations for her scientific work and her contribution to solving environmental problems.
Since 2019, she has been the President of Waste to Energy Research and Technology (WtERT), the Greek branch of the Global WtERT Council, based at Columbia University, USA.
